In this cross-cultural program, students in After-School programs at the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center After-School Programs, and students in the Delores School in Taxco, Mexico will read selected stories from the book "Sun, Stone and Shadows", and create altars celebrating the lives of several deceased authors, including Octavio Paz, Martin Luiz Guzman, and Juan Rulfo. Educators from the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center will travel to Taxco, Mexico and work at the Dolores School with high school students, students with special needs, and physically- and mentally-challenged students. The original artwork created by students in Mexico will be brought back and displayed for students at the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center, who will respond by creating their own students will view the work of their Mexican counterparts and create their own altars. The artwork created by students in the US will in turn be shared with the participating students in Mexico. Upon conclusion, the artwork created by participating students from both Mexico and the United States will be combined to create a large visual presentation to be displayed at the City Hall Bridge Gallery and the Barnsdall Jr. Art Center Gallery. Parters include the United Nations International Sister City Organization; the "Friends of Taxco"; and the Dolores School in Taxco, Mexico.

The Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum is exhibiting The Civilian Conservation Corps in Claiborne and Surrounding Parishes a project of Triumph Over Tragedy. This exhibit salutes the revitalization and reforestation work successfully completed by America's young men at a time when economic chaos and unemployment had gripped the country for two years. A 1937 photograph of the Claiborne Parish Civilian Conservation Corp located in Homer and a photograph of the young men enlisted at that time serve as a backdrop to the exhibit on President Roosevelt massive revitalization of the nation’s economy. As part of Roosevelt’s New Deal, the CCC brought together the nation’s young men and the land in an effort to save them both. This peacetime army was sent out to battle the erosion and destruction of the nation’s resources. The Reading Remix Exhibition will feature the work of the 20 students from Boys & Girls High School who have participated in our Big Read high school program called Reading Remix. Students have studied the text for five months, deconstructing themes and narrative found in Fahrenheit 451 and using those deconstructions as inspiration for digital media art work that will be displayed. In the 1930s, photographers working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) captured unforgettable images of human fortitude and despair in the face of calamity; Nebraska photographer Bill Ganzel set out in the late 1970s to find and re-photograph Dust Bowl survivors for a book and exhibition. This exhibit, abridged from the original by Humanities Texas and displayed in Sherman in 1999, combines the FSA photographs and Ganzel’s interviews to create an eloquent story of human fortitude.

Masur Museum of Art will host the culminating art exhibit resulting from three years of planning and development of the commemoration of the Great Depression in "Triumph Over Tragedy." The exhibit will include a documentary film created by Patrick Long,digial showings of the elder interviews, storytellers representation of the elders stories of the Great Depression, and a photographic display of "Elders" who lived through the Great Depression and New Deal Era in North Louisiana. Photographers Brad Arendar, Scarlett Hendrix and Neil Johnson have curated an exhibition of their favorite photos of the project.

BIG READ Maltese Falcon Book Discussion DATES: Mystery comes to Southington when The Southington Library and Museum celebrate the hard-boiled detective story The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett during Big Read project. Published in 1930, The Maltese Falcon was Dashiell Hammett's third novel in two years. Here he creates a new detective, Sam Spade. When the intriguing Miss Wonderly appears in his office and asks him to tail a fellow named Floyd Thursby, Spade puts his partner, Miles Archer, on the case. A greedy and ruthless trio of characters bent on finding the statuette meet their match in Sam Spade. The plot, characters, and dialogue in The Maltese Falcon are perfectly controlled by Hammett, incorporating a vigor and style that became the paradigm for hard-boiled crime fiction.

In this program, students at the Sun Valley Youth Arts Center will read select stories from "Sun, Stone, and Shadows," and create artwork in three mediums: digital photography, ceramic sculpture, and paper-mache sculpture. The Latino Theater Company, a multi-cultural theater company, will facilitate discussion and lead free theatrical workshops with 150 students from participating Los Angeles Unified School District schools. The Culminating Production will be open to the general public, as well as all participating schools. Workshops will focus on the stories discussed in the NEA Reader’s and Teacher’s Guides. Each student will develop a concept for a new play inspired by the book to be commissioned by LTC. These concepts will be developed by the students and LTC staff into a final play to be performed by the students at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in Downtown Los Angeles. The Fenton Historical Society of Jamestown, NY will be holding a roundtable discussion on immigration on March 10 at the Jackson Center from 6:30-8:30 PM. They hope to promote discussion among the panel and the audience about the immigration issue, both how it has shaped our county's character and the current issues.
